THE BIG DEAL: ANIMAL NUTRITION WORKSTREAM

Pathways to Progress header

Reducing the carbon footprint of a dairy operation can go hand in hand with the operation’s efficiency, profitability, and sustainability.

These pillars are bridged together by nutrition.

This is why Pathways to Dairy Net Zero (P2DNZ) partnered with Trouw Nutrition to launch a global pre-competitive Animal Nutrition Workstream, which was kicked off with a webinar on January 17.

Global Climate Change Organization Honors Pathways to Dairy Net Zero

The Business and Industry Major Group (BIMG), a global coalition of more than 70 businesses, industry associations and related institutions, has named Pathways to Dairy Net Zero (P2DNZ) as a Global Beacon Project.

The inaugural BIMG Beacon Projects report was released in February 2024 at the sixth meeting of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-6) in Nairobi, Kenya. BIMG considers the Beacon Projects to be a testament to the power of collaborative efforts to address challenges such as climate change, biodiversity and inequality on the local, regional and global levels.

The report showcases 35 projects and demonstrates their role in scaling up sustainable initiatives worldwide. P2DNZ is cited as a global climate project. The report notes, “The movement is dedicated to reducing dairy’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions over the next 30 years and brings together a diverse range of dairy farms of every size and type, as well as organizations throughout the dairy supply chain.”

BIMG is accredited to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). It represents more than 5,000 leading global, regional and domestic businesses that are addressing climate, biodiversity loss and pollution, while working toward the Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Climate Agreement.

WORTH A SHARE

P2DNZ has been researching GHG emissions mitigation options, pinpointing the specific actions different dairy stakeholders can take to make practical sustainable progress today. Because while not every mitigation approach will be applicable to every dairy constituent, all of us can start making sustainable changes in our unique situations. And we should. After all, it will take collaborative action in a variety of areas to achieve our dairy sustainability goals.

Help us spread the word about the role dairy stakeholder can make through animal nutrition by clicking the link below and downloading animal nutrition social assets. Then share them on your social media accounts. Feel free to tag us and use the #PathwaysToDairy NetZero hashtag!

THE NEXT STEP

Managing the nutrition of a dairy herd benefits not only the environment but also the health of the animals and the operation’s efficiency, sustainability, and profitability. Producers can start this work right away by analyzing how they feed their herds from the day they are born through their fifth lactation, which will increase milk production while reducing GHGs.

We also encourage dairy sector companies and organizations to sign the P2DNZ Declaration to become part of this vibrant, growing movement, the first of its kind in the world. The more our sector can work together, the more sustainable progress we’ll make.
