Major Investment Approved for P2DNZ Climate-Smart Dairy Initiative in East Africa

The Green Climate Fund (GCF) has approved US$150 million toward a $358 million (US) initiative to cut emissions and boost resilience in East Africa’s dairy sector. The Dairy Interventions for Mitigation and Adaptation (DaIMA) programme is led by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Investment Centre.

The initiative, which builds upon the success of the Dairy Nourishes Africa, was initially titled “Pathways to Dairy Net Zero in East Africa: Promoting Low Carbon and Climate Resilient Livestock in East Africa” and aims to reduce emissions from the livestock sector while improving productivity and increasing the resilience of livestock-dependent communities.

DaIMA targets Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda, aiming to support 2.5 million smallholder farmers directly and reach 15 million more through the broader dairy value chain. IFAD and the FAO Investment Centre led the planning, along with support from GDP, Bain & Company, Global Methane Hub and USAID.
