Pathways to Dairy Net Zero: ANIMAL NUTRITION TASK FORCE

Cows on Farm. Black and white cows eating hay in the stable.

The Pathways to Dairy Net Zero (P2DNZ) Animal Nutrition Task Force started in 2024 and aims to maximize the global dairy sector’s ability to lower greenhouse gas emissions through animal nutrition.

The scope of animal nutrition includes forage, feed, diet formulation, feeding, and feed additives. Trouw Nutrition is the sponsor of the animal nutrition workstream, which meets regularly to move forward on the task force’s goals.

WHY IS THIS TASK FORCE NEEDED?

The Animal Nutrition Task Force was designed to identify high-impact development areas and assembling workstreams to address them. With a pre-competitive and collaborative forum, the group identifies and addresses barriers to implementing and scaling solutions while demonstrating the dairy sector’s commitment to achieving sustainability goals.

WHAT IS THE TASK FORCE DOING?

P2DNZ Animal Nutrition Workstream has a five-year (minimum) commitment to continue to identify opportunities for collective action in the feed and nutrition space to reduce the dairy sector’s carbon footprint.

WHAT ARE THE TASK FORCE’S NEXT STEPS?

The group has met in-person and virtually, and has identified the best ways to provide an environment in which animal nutrition innovations can be brought to the marketplace. Members have decided the greatest impact could be achieved by collectively addressing these areas:

  1. Optimizing Dairy Farming Systems
  2. Improving Nutrition Systems
  3. Improving Innovation Adoption
  4. Building a Database of GHG Mitigation Innovations

At the April 2024 in-person workshop, participants worked to build systems to reach and implement on-farm actions at scale. The aim of these systems is to improve efficiencies and other outcomes to lower the footprint of milk production using newly developed methods.
