THE BIG DEAL: P2DNZ Animal Nutrition Workstream Takes Big Step Forward

P2DNZ Animal Nutrition Workstream Takes Big Step Forward It takes a community to lay the groundwork for maximizing the global dairy sector’s ability to lower greenhouse gas emissions through animal nutrition.

The Pathways to Dairy NetZero (P2DNZ) community came together in April in the Netherlands and took a big step forward in achieving that goal.

P2DNZ Part of Effort to Improve Dairy Productivity,
Lower Emissions in Pakistan

Pathways to Dairy Next Zero (P2DNZ) played an important role last month in an event aiming to help the Pakistan dairy sector improve its productivity and reduce GHG emissions.

GDP Executive Director Donald Moore spoke on behalf of P2DNZ at the Low-Emission and Climate-Resilient Dairy Productive Improvement Project Design workshop in Islamabad on May 7.

The work fits with the P2DNZ mission to help emerging economies improve dairy productivity while reducing emissions.

USAID organized the workshop in conjunction with National Rural Support Programme (NRSP) and GDP. The meeting’s objective was to start engagement with dairy and livestock stakeholders so a proposal to the Green Climate Fund could be developed.

In addition to the Pakistan initiative, there are other developing economy P2DNZ initiatives under way in East Africa and Latin America.

Dairy Processing Workstream Starts Work to Lower GHGs

Processors are an integral part of the dairy industry and, as such, can also play a huge role in helping the sector lower its climate impact.

On the heels of the successful P2DNZ webinar, Latest Advances in Dairy Processing Technologies to Tackle GHG Emissions Webinar, leaders in the sector from across the globe met in Chicago at the end of May to kick off the work of the Dairy Processing Workstream.

The group completed an energy, water, and product stream analysis for a dairy plant to help identify solutions needed to reach a net zero emission state. They created an action plan around analyzing each of these areas:

  • Milk receiving
  • Milk pasteurization
  • Storage, transfer, and agitation
  • Cleaning in place

The workstream is possible through the generous support of Tetra Pak.

THE NEXT STEP

Managing the nutrition of a dairy herd benefits not only the environment but also the health of the animals and the operation’s efficiency, sustainability, and profitability. Producers can start this work right away by analyzing how they feed their herds from the day they are born through their fifth lactation, which will increase milk production while reducing GHGs.

We also encourage dairy sector companies and organizations to sign the P2DNZ Declaration to become part of this vibrant, growing movement, the first of its kind in the world. The more our sector can work together, the more sustainable progress we’ll make.
