THE BIG DEAL: Discussing Environmental Innovation in Climate Week NYC

Global Dairy Platform (GDP) and Pathways to Dairy Net Zero (P2DNZ) supporters seized an opportunity at Climate Week NYC in September 2024 to share the dairy sector’s environmental commitment and progress story.

GDP helped organize two side events – “Livestock Tackling the Methane Challenge,” which GDP organized in conjunction with the Global Roundtable for Sustainable Beef; and “Pastures of Plenty – Sustainable Livestock Solutions for Climate, Nature, and People,” which was produced by the Advancing Livestock for Climate (Alive4Climate) Coalition, which includes GDP and several NGOs.

Future Fit Dairy Initiative Announced at NOURISH

Jan Derck van Karnebeek, CEO, Royal FrieslandCampina, second from right, and Hanne Søndergaard, Executive Vice President, CASO, Arla Foods, left, announce the Future Fit Dairy Initiative at NOURISH 2024 in Paris in October 2024.

The Future Fit Dairy Initiative (FFDI), a regenerative agriculture approach that involves five leading companies in the dairy value chain – Arla Foods, Danone, dsm-firmenich, FrieslandCampina, and Rabobank – was announced at NOURISH 2024 in Paris in October.

FFDI founders note they have a shared commitment and belief that dairy can contribute to nourishing communities while operating within planetary boundaries, giving our planet more than it takes from it. The initiative is associated with P2DNZ, and builds on the work of existing industry coalitions like the Sustainable Agriculture Initiative (SAI) Platform and WBCSD/OP2B to develop farmer-centric and practical solutions.

This year, the participants have started testing the framework with a selection of dairy farms in several countries in Northwestern Europe and will scale up these pilots from 2025. FFDI’s mission is to demonstrate and scale regenerative agriculture in that region to inspire action globally. Ultimately, participants plan to develop science-based outcomes, help farmers transition to a climate resilient farming system and minimize climate impact while securing livelihoods and supply of nutrition.

GDP, P2DNZ to Ensure Dairy’s Story Prominent at COP29

Fresh off the success of Climate Week in New York, GDP and P2DNZ are looking to build on that momentum at COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, in November.

GDP and partner organizations and members will tell dairy’s environmental progress story to influential global leaders at multiple side events.

This includes:

  • November 20: An official side event “Sustainable Strategies for Dairy, Beef, and Rice Sectors: Efforts to Cut Methane Emissions” in conjunction with the Global Roundtable for Sustainable Beef (GRSB) and the country of Uruguay. The event will explore sustainable strategies for the dairy, beef, and rice sectors to cut methane emissions, while highlighting innovative practices and collaborative efforts.
  • November 13: A second event in the CGIAR Pavilion that goes into more detail on strategies for the rice, dairy and beef sectors to reduce methane emissions. GDP Executive Director Donald Moore will speak on a panel, and discuss the sector’s commitment to environmental progress, as exemplified in P2DNZ.

THE NEXT STEP

We need your help in telling dairy’s story!

Everyone from producers to processors, to consumers can add their voice to support the
dairy industry.

The more voices speaking up about dairy’s environmental commitment and progress
story, the more it will spread.

One way to do that is to sign the P2DNZ Declaration to become part of this vibrant,
growing movement, the first of its kind in the world. The more our sector can
work together, the more sustainable progress we’ll make.
