THE BIG DEAL: Why It’s Important to Balance Climate Action with Nutrition Security

The challenge of developing a healthy, sustainable global food system is a balance – while trying to mitigate the environmental impact of farming and food production, it’s also vital to provide enough safe, nutritious, high-quality food to nourish a growing world population, which the UN forecasts will reach nearly 10 billion by 2050.

During Climate Week NYC, Global Dairy Platform (GDP) brought together leading experts from across the food system for a candid discussion on how to improve global nutritional security while reducing environmental impacts.

The side event, “Why Healthy, Sustainable Food Systems Need Nutrition and Climate Action,” highlighted that tackling hunger and climate change must go hand in hand.

GDP Features Pathways to Dairy Net Zero at COP30 Brazil

Global Dairy Platform (GDP) is taking an active role at COP30 Brazil starting this week, emphasizing the dairy sector’s leadership in climate action and sustainable food systems,  through programs like Pathways to Dairy NetZero (P2DNZ). Executive Director Donald Moore and Sustainability Lead and Dairy Sustainability Framework (DSF) Director Brian Lindsay are representing GDP, sharing how the sector is advancing environmental progress while supporting global nutrition and livelihoods.

Throughout COP30, GDP will lead and participate in key events focused on connecting climate goals with food security, including:

  • November 11: GDP will host a session at Embrapa Agrizone titled “Integrating Climate Action and Nutrition for Healthy, Sustainable Food Systems” from 12:40 to 13:45, focusing on the goal of a healthy, sustainable global food system, and how it can be achieved through a balance of providing nutrient-rich foods, accounting for socio-economic impact and recognizing planetary boundaries.
  • November 13: GDP will co-host “Livestock Balancing Act: Climate, Nutrition, and Livelihoods” with the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), HealthforAnimals, and the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI).
  • November 14: GDP will join the Clean Air Task Force (CATF) and Instituto Imaflora at the CGIAR/Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Pavilion to discuss how collaborative work can integrate climate action into livestock production systems while ensuring the continued delivery of nutritious food and addressing food insecurity.
  • November 15: GDP’s official side event, co-hosted with the Government of Kenya, is “Investing in Adaptation, Mitigation and Sustainable Dairy Systems in East Africa.” This session will spotlight demonstrated solutions that can be scaled for impact, emphasizing the global dairy sector’s progress in commitment, tracking, action, and impact. It will focus on Pathways to Dairy Net Zero (P2DNZ) and presentation of a regional P2DNZ workstream in East Africa – the Dairy Interventions for Mitigation and Adaptation (DaIMA) programme – which will demonstrate how USD 358 million is being leveraged to transition dairy systems toward lower emissions and greater climate resilience.

Also, during pre-COP30 activities in Brasília last week, Moore and Lindsay participated in the 2025 Conference of Ministers of Agriculture of the Americas, including meetings with Instituto Interamericano de Cooperación para la Agricultura (IICA), and with Bruno Brasil, Director of Sustainable Production and Irrigation at the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock along with other international agriculture officials (pictured here). They also attended the Global Climate-Smart Agriculture Conference and the Farmers’ Summit, organized by the World Farmers’ Organisation and CNA Brazil.
