Pathways to Dairy Net Zero: DAIRY PROCESSING TASK FORCE

Dairy Processing

Drive Innovation. Reduce Emissions. Secure a Sustainable Future.

Many companies are working hard to meet sustainability and environmental goals that come due in 2030 or later. Regulatory compliance, carbon reporting, and emissions pricing are already reshaping how companies operate.

That’s why it’s important for dairy processing leaders to find ways to quickly reduce Scope 1 emissions, which is one of the primary goals of the P2DNZ Dairy Processing Task Force.

The P2DNZ Dairy Processing Task Force is focused on developing realistic, achievable solutions in the short term while keeping track of emerging developments.

About the Task Force

Launched in 2023 with industry leadership from Tetra Pak, the P2DNZ Dairy Processing Task Force is a pre-competitive global forum dedicated to helping the dairy sector rapidly reduce Scope 1 emissions – the emissions produced directly from processing operations.

The task force is open to all equipment suppliers and dairy processors creating an environment where experts can share/learn best practices with like-minded executives from companies and suppliers across the value chain and around the globe. In this environment, dairy processors, equipment and technology suppliers, researchers, and R&D institutions get together to drive:

  • Short-term action with real-world solutions
  • Long-term innovation aligned with net zero goals
  • Collaboration across the entire value chain

What the Task Force Does

The group takes a whole-plant approach to explore all dairy processing stages – from collection and pasteurization to packaging and refrigeration.

It aims to:

  • Identify existing solutions that can eliminate waste and reduce emissions now.
  • Scope emerging innovations that can transform operations in the years ahead.
  • Explore products such as fluid milk, yogurt, cheese, and dried products.

Together, participants work to unlock sustainability gains from the often-overlooked middle of the value chain: the processing plant.

Why This Task Force Matters

While on-farm emissions often draw the spotlight, dairy processors can – and must – play a pivotal role in achieving net zero.

Scope 1 emissions may be a smaller share of total dairy sector emissions, but they are within our immediate control. By addressing them today, we can reduce environmental impact, mitigate financial risk, and strengthen operational resilience.
